Security Council: Foreign Electoral Intervention
Dear Delegates,

Foreign electoral intervention is not an unusual occurrence. From 1946 through to present day, 11 percent of all elections that have taken place globally have been influenced by either the United States or Russia. Although this statistic paints election meddling as an age-old story, the act of trying to influence the outcome of elections in other nations is increasingly proving to be a threat to global security and the sovereignty of every nation.
This issue has been brought to the world’s attention recently as Russia’s influence in the 2016 presidential election of the United States was and continues to be a topic in headlines. Equally relevant is the accusation American president Donald Trump directed towards the delegation of China about intervening in the 2018 midterm elections of the United States, which was a bold statement to be made during the Security Council meeting in October of last year. Undeniably, the threat of conflict caused by these events is alarming. As the Security Council is responsible for acting in regards to threats to global peace and the sovereignty of all nations, it is imperative that the Council address and monitor this grave issue that jeopardizes democracy and freedom across the globe.
Your Chair,
Cécilia Muecke
